NOTICE OF LAST DAY OF REGISTRATION

FOR THE ELECTION TO BE HELD ON

TUESDAY, AUGUST 5, 2014

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that an election will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2014.  The last day to register to vote or change your address for the election will be Monday, July 7, 2014. Persons registering after the deadline will not be eligible to vote at the election.

Voters may register by mail using a mail-in voter registration form or in person at a Secretary of State Branch Office or the applicant’s county, city or township clerk’s office.

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that candidates of the following partisan offices are to be voted for in St. Joseph County: US Senator, US Representative in Congress, State Representative, County Commissioner, and such other partisan offices that may by law be required to be nominated at the primary.

PLEASE BE FURTHER NOTIFIED that delegates to the Republican Party and Democratic Party country conventions will be elected at the August 5, 2014 Primary Election.

THE FURTHER PURPOSE of the election is to vote on the following proposals as presented and listed below:

STATE PROPOSAL

APPROVAL OR DISAPPROVAL OF AMENDATORY ACT TO REDUCE STATE USE TAX AND REPLACE WITH A LOCAL COMMUNITY STABILIZATION SHARE TO MODERNIZE THE TAX SYSTEM TO HELP SMALL BUSINESSES GROW AND CREATE JOBS.

COUNTY PROPOSAL(S)

TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY MILLAGE RENEWAL AUTHORIZING THE COUNTY TO LEVY .33 OF A MILL ($0.33 PER $1,000 OF TAXABLE VALUATION) FOR A PERIOD OF FOUR (4) YEARS FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF OPERATION MILLAGE FOR THE St. JOSEPH COUNTY TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY FOR THE CONTINUATION OF TRANSPORTATION SERVICES.

ROAD MILLAGE RENEWAL AUTHORIZING THE COUNTY TO LEVY 1 MILL ($1.00 PER $1,000 OF TAXABLE VALUATION) FOR A PERIOD OF TEN (10) YEARS FOR ROAD PURPOSES WITHIN THE INCORPORATED CITIES AND VILLAGES IN ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, MICHIGAN TO IMPROVE, REPAIR AND MAINTAIN EXISTING LOCAL ROADS, WITH THE MONEY TO BE COLLECTED AND DISTRUBTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ALL APPLICALBE STATUES.

PRIMARY/MAJOR/LOCAL ROADS AND BRIDGE IMPROVEMENTS AUTHORIZING THE COUNTY TO INCREASE BY UP TO 2.0 MILLS ($2.00 PER $1,000 OF TAXABLE VALUATION) FOR A PERIOD OF TEN (10) YEARS FOR ROAD PURPOSES WITHIN THE INCORPORATED CITIES AND VILLAGES IN ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, MICHIGAN FOR CONSTRUCTION, IMPROVEMENT, REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE OF PRIMARY ROADS, MAJOR STREETS, LOCAL ROADS, AND BRIDGES UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE ST. JOSEPH COUNTY ROAD COMMISSION, WITH THE MONEY TO BE COLLECTED AND DISTRUBTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ALL APPLICALBE STATUES.

PERSONS ENTITLED to be registered voters must possess the following qualifications on or before the day of the election: (1) a citizen of the United States; (2) not less than 18 years of age; (3) a resident of the State of Michigan and a resident for not less than 30 days prior to the election (MCL 168.492).  In addition, qualified electors must be registered to vote not less than 30 days prior to the election (MCL 168.497).

Please contact your City/Township Clerk for information regarding absentee ballots. The last day for absentee ballots to be mailed is Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.
