The Blue and Gold Macaw is a parrot from the forest and woodland of tropical South America, who mates for life. It is one of the biggest parrots in the world, weighing 2-3 pounds. Macaws are long-lived, reaching 80 or older. Our Sam is just 10 this year, so she is a young adult. We like to call her “our Walmart greeter” because she loves to sit on the fence in the front of the zoo and wave to visitors. She eats pelleted species specific food in addition to a wide variety of supplimental greens, fruits, and vegetables.
