How to identify your service line material

What do you need?

  • House key or coin
  • A strong magnet
  • Mobile phone or camera

Steps to identify your service line material:

  1. Find the water service line entering your property through your basement or utility closet.
  2. Look for the pipe that comes into your house and connects to the water meter. If your meter is located in a pit outside, the pipe coming into the house is sufficient.
  3. Use the flat edge of the coin or key to scratch the pipe material. If the pipe is painted, use sandpaper to expose the metal first.
  4. If the pipe is grey or silver use the magnet and see if the magnet sticks to the pipe.
  5. Use the description to identify the material and fill in the form below.
  6. Please wash your hands immediately after performing the test.

Lead

  • Silver-gray and shiny in color when scratched
  • Not magnetic

Copper

  • Shiny and orange like a copper penny when scratched
  • Not magnetic

Galvanized

  • Silver-gray in color when scratched
  • Magnetic

Plastic

  • Does not scratch easily
  • Not magnetic
