The Department of Public Services is the backbone of the City. This department works with street maintenance (patching and snow removal), storm sewers, street sweeping, bridge maintenance, traffic signs, sidewalks, sewer lines, water lines, tree maintenance and planting as well as many other duties.

The City has approximately 41.38 miles of paved streets. There is currently a street rebuilding program which allows the proceeds from 3.7 miles of street taxes to be spent on our local street system. In addition to those moneys, the City also receives money from the State to help maintain the streets which have been designated major and local streets.

STREET PAVING
The City Commission will be considering which local streets will be included in the paving program for next year. Any citizens wishing to have their street considered for a paving program should write a letter or turn in a petition to the City Clerk. In this way, City Administration can take that information under consideration when making its recommendation to the City Commission. This decision is usually made during the months of January and February.

SIDEWALK INSTALLATIONS OR REPAIR
The City currently has a sidewalk paving program which allows a property owner to repair the sidewalk in front of their property. If a property owner has sidewalks that need repair, please contact Merritt Brown at (269) 273-1845 to have your name and address placed on the list.

WATER AND SEWER PROBLEMS
If you are experiencing problems with your water or sewer lines or service, please contact our office. If the problem is an emergency and not during regular business hours, please call (269) 467-4195 and they will call someone in to service your problem.

However, if your water has been shut off, you will need to call the Finance Department at (269) 273-1075. The City does charge a turn on fee if the water has been shut off for non-payment or you need water turned on at a time other than regular business hours.

WATER & SEWER LINE REPAIR
The City has a Water Line Repair Fund to help defray the cost of repairing the water line which runs from a house to the street. To find out about this program, please call the Finance Department at (269) 273-1075.

COMPOST & RECYCLING

The City of Three Rivers compost drop off area at the Department of Public Services is open Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m..  Please do not drop off any material when the site is closed as security on-site will be used to address violations.  If you have any questions, please call the Department of Public Services at 273-1845.

The recycling program serviced by Republic Waste Services was funded with a one-year grant from St. Joseph County.  The City chose not to continue the program in 2008 because it would be an additional tax levy on residents.  If you wish to recycle, you may use the Westside Landfill drop off location on Saturday mornings or you may hire a private firm to pick up your recyclables.  Michiana Recycling and Disposal has offered weekly curbside recycling for its trash customers at a cost of $1 per month.  Michiana can be reached at 800-722-9710.
