Petting Zoo Personality: Rita the Emu

0

The Emu is a member of the ratite group, the largest bird native to Australia, and the second tallest bird in the world, after the ostrich. They are nomadic and travel long distances. This is why no matter how large an emu’s enclosure, she will run the perimeter. Emus are farmed for meat, oil, and leather. They have a soft bill adapted for grazing. Our Rita eats species specific food as well as grass, insects, caterpillars, zippers, beaded jewelry and diamond earrings (just ask the petting zoo staff).
